Event Buzz: Health Care  11/4/2015

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. However, an increasing number of studies have shown that this bacteria does more than remedy digestive issues, instead researchers are finding a link between this ‘good’ bacteria and an enhanced immune system, relief from skin conditions like Eczema, allergy relief and much, much more.

The growing interest in probiotics and its ability to help heal various ailments has penetrated many markets, including consumer packaged goods. During the ECRM Health Care event in St. Pete Beach, Florida, attendees were asked about the most popular trends seen throughout the course of the event and hands down, probiotics was among the most talked about categories.

As consumers around the world are becoming increasingly aware of the favorable benefits, the market is likely to reap rich gains in coming years. In an article posted on Vitaminretailer.com, Patricia Pirrie, digestive category manager for NOW Health Group in Illinois says this about the growing popularity of probiotics, “U.S. sales of probiotic supplements and products are growing steadily, totaling $1.4 billion in 2014 and are expected to reach $3.1 billion in 2020.”

However, probiotics are running into a challenge and that is a high price point. With the recent shift to more natural remedies, probiotics offer a more organic alternative to over the counter medications which, in the eyes of consumers, justifies paying top dollar.

The growing interest in and popularity of all-natural and organic products is touching every market including the first aid, foot care, eye/ear, digestives, analgesics and allergy categories as seen at the Health Care event.  One buyer attendee said, “Consumers are choosing therapeutic remedies over pills.” This new influence definitely changes the game for retailers and suppliers as they shift their product offerings to align with consumer demand and may also be part of the reason we see such growth in probiotic products.
