Landing New Customers with Sustainable Seafood  4/13/2022

Consumers are increasingly seeking products that are not just healthier for themselves, but also healthier for the planet, and one of the most impactful ways to reach these shoppers is by demonstrating your commitment to the planet with sustanability-certified products such as those approved by the Marine Stewardship Council.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global nonprofit organization that works to end overfishing around the world. Working with scientists, fisheries, industry experts, and other nonprofits, the MSC’s goal is to improve the way our ocean is fished through the MSC Fisheries Standard and Chain of Custody Standard. The MSC program incentivizes sustainable fishing practices globally.

Through the use of the MSC blue fish label, the MSC makes it easy for buyers and consumers to identify and choose certified sustainable, wild-caught seafood.

During ECRM's Spring Seafood Session, to be held May 3 to 5, MSC will present an educational session titled, "Meeting the Growing Demand for Sustainable Products Through Consumer Engagement Campaigns," in which it will share key learnings and consumers insights from its public engagement campaigns, as well as case studies from its work with retailers and brands.

Following is some additional video content from MSC, including a demo on how to find MSC-certified products using RangeMe!

Little Labels, Big Impact: How Certifications Protect People and Planet
More and more shoppers want to know how the food they buy affects people and our planet, including how it was grown, harvested, and produced. That’s where third-party certification comes in. When you see little labels by independent third-party certifiers on your food, you know that product underwent a rigorous evaluation to ensure it met a set of strict standards.

MSC has partnered with Fairtrade America and the Non-GMO Project to celebrate Good Food Month in October and encourage shoppers to make the switch to third-party certified products year round. Hear results from the 2021 campaign and plans for the future, including how and why to shine a spotlight on third party labeled products in the future.
